Lt. Everett completed his biometric sequencing and synaptic trace on the morning of May 30, 2071 then made his way to the Transcription lab at 08:26. Christina Chang was assigned as acting director for the procedure, with Brock Winters as chief medical technician. Captain Williams again supervised the procedure and provided Brock with assistance. Dr. Parsons was allowed to participate in an observatory capacity and stood along the back wall with Captain Williams.

After sitting down in the pod, Lt. Everett smiled and gave the cushioned surface a small bounce. “More comfortable than I thought.”

“The surface is a next-generation synthetic,” Brock replied. “You’ll actually sink a bit in once you lie down, and the surface acts as a guide for the laser systems.”

Lt. Everett smiled, raised his legs, shifted to his left, and laid down in the pod.

Christina left her screen at the far end of the room and arrived at the side of the pod. She helped Brock set the restraints on Lt. Everett, who softly shifted in the pod and attempted to get comfortable.

“Need anything else?” Christina asked as she stood over Lt. Everett.

“Be here when I wake up?”

She smiled. “You know it.”

“Don’t let them monkey around with this machine until I get back,” he continued. “And keep a close eye on Dr. Parsons. Note any abnormalities in your logs.”

“I suppose I also should also remind you this conversation took place when you wake up.”

“That might help.” Lt. Everett grinned. “All right, let’s get this over with.” He looked at Brock, who was prepping for marking.

Christina returned to her screen toward the back of the room and monitored the pod as Brock began his marking procedures. Dr. Parsons pushed off from the back wall, walked up behind Christina, and reviewed the screen.

“Little space, please,” Christina murmured, not breaking her stare from the screen.

“Just seeing how things are going,” Dr. Parsons responded.

“We’re on schedule. Vitals are good. We should begin in a few minutes.”

“Great,” Dr. Parsons continued. “And how’s he doing?”

“Six of one, half dozen of the other.”

“But he’s ready to go?” Dr. Parsons asked.

“Ready as he will be. We’ll be starting soon, ma’am.”

Dr. Parsons smiled, looked over to the pod, then turned and rejoined Captain Williams along the back wall.

“Markings complete,” Brock shouted to Christina as he stood up and tapped the screen hanging near the pod.

“Got it,” Christina replied as she tapped and swiped her screen. “Bringing up procedures. Let me know when you’re finished.”

“All good,” he called back as he reached down and gave Lt. Everett a soft tap on the shoulder, then returned the monitor to the ceiling and headed across the room toward Christina.

Lt. Everett sat quietly in the pod and stared at the ceiling. One can only surmise what was going through his mind. As the third test subject for Transcription, he was about to embark on the world’s first range test, 365 days. To him it would be an instant. But part of him also surely knew it wouldn’t be an instant for his current self; that life would be over in seconds.
